Borthwick had been working on a feature based on the adventures of Gilbert Shelton's Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers.

R.I.P. Run Wrake (1965 - 2012)

I was deeply saddened this morning to hear of the passing of animator, artist and teacher Run Wrake. His wife posted this today on his Facebook page:


It is with incredible sadness that I have to let you know that our darling Run passed away very suddenly at 5am on Sunday morning as an end result of his cancer. He had spent a beautiful Saturday with his two children Florence and Joe, his sister Fiona and myself. We left him at 7pm doing what he loved best- drawing and animating with peg bar and paper. I was with him for his last moments. We love you Run. Lisa Wrake.


My deepest sympathies to his loved ones.


He was brilliant and inspiring, and his tremendous talent and originality will be missed.

I'll post more of his work tomorrow.

This is one of the films inspired by the Protect and Survive series that I posted about yesterday.

The Protect and Survive series was part of a larger British civil defense program in the 1970s and 1980s that also included pamphlets and radio programs.

The series was considered classified material that was intended for transmission on all television channels only if the government determined that nuclear attack was likely within 72 hours, although recordings were leaked to organisations like CND and press organisations like the BBC, who broadcast it on Panorama as a discussion of public affairs. Fortunately, their efficacy was never put to the test, but they did capture the nation's imagination, and by that I mean they SCARED THE LIVING SHIT OUT OF EVERYONE. They were thus influential in popular culture.

Filipino graphic novelist Arnold Arre wanted to see his superhero Andong Agimat come to life.

As a graphic novelist, I've always been frustrated with the limitations of the static comic book page. I wanted to see my drawings in motion and have the luxury to set them to sound and particularly music. Armed with experience from the many flip books I made as a kid, I managed to make my very first animated film, Andong Agimat: Kanya ang Kalye ("The Streets are His").. It's only 4 minutes long but it took around two weeks to make. I really had fun working on this and I hope you'll enjoy watching it. :)

I am deeply, deeply saddened to hear of the passing yesterday of Maurice Sendak.

He was an inspiration to me, and to so many. He wrote books for children, but he understood that children were people, with complex inner lives that were sometimes strange and frightening. He never talked down to them - to us, after all, we were some of those children. He was wild and brave and honest and we loved him for it.


Here are animated versions of his classic tales Where the Wild Things Are and In The Night Kitchen, books we loved and thoroughly mauled.

Rest in peace, Mr. Sendak. And thank you, thank you so much.

Those familiar with the Fleischer brothers original Betty might find her characterization in this 1985 television special jarring, though clearly pains have been taken to assure Mizz Boop retains her ba-doop (she's apparently based heavily on Grim Natwick's character sketches.)


Still, it's a cute special with some cool design, if you can step back from your strong expectations of what a Betty Boop cartoon is supposed to be (and deal with her cringe inducing sexy-talk.) The fey, louche, cross-eyed, butt-chinned Waldo VanLavish cracks me up.


Whatever happened to that Bimbo fellow? He seemed like such a nice young man.

HEY YOU GUYS YOUR DAILY CARTOON IS THREE YEARS OLD!

(OK, it was really three on the 14th but I forgot so I will do this on the anniversary I started the blog. Because it is my blog and I can do that.)

And just like a petulant three year old, I'm gonna post a full length Hungarian feature with no subtitles. Nyah.

I have been dying to see Habfürdő since I first ran across some blurry, poor quality clips on YouTube. I was immediately intrigued by the way that Kovásznai distorted faces and bodies to express changing moods and the characters perceptions of themselves and each other. I'm positive that I am missing a lot - unlike something like Fehérlófia the story isn't known or easy to follow, and it can be very wordy. But Kovásznai was a really fantastic animator with a unique aesthetic informed by his extensive artistic training, and on those merits I still find the film rewarding, especially since the artist communicates so well visually.

Kovásznai György was so cool his works were shown with those of the esteemed William Kentridge at The Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest last year. THAT IS SO BADASS. My head would have exploded.

Les Maitres du Temp (Time Masters) Rene Laloux and Jean Giraud (Moebius) 1982

As many, if not all, of you know, Jean Giraud, aka Moebius and less often Gir, passed away yesterday. We are far poorer for his loss.

His work was delicate, precise, infinitely imaginitve, and utterly breathtaking. I was often struck most by his restraint - sometimes what he decided not to draw was as powerful as that which he included.

If you are unfamiliar with his work you could do far worse than to look here first.

This is the feature length film he made with Rene Laloux which you might be able to find on DVD if you are lucky.

The problem was not with the studios, or the quality of work they were producing, but rather with the clients: Most of them seemed to believe that animation was a simple, uncomplicated process, and were often disappointed to learn that there were very specific stages in the animation process that required their participation (and finances). It's almost as if they believed that creating animation was as simple as pitching an idea, and then sitting back while a couple of animators with pencil and paper goofed off, told jokes, and drank copious amounts of coffee until "wallah"! the animation was finished! Furthermore, they seemed to think that there would be no difference in cost between an animated film created in flash, 2D, stop motion, cut-out, motion graphics, or fully rendered Pixar-style 3D animation!
